How to get prepaid tag for tolls on national highways

Posted by: Girija Gadre on Aug 28, 2017, 06.30 AM IST

Instead of standing in long queues to pay toll on national highways, it is now possible to use a prepaid tag.

The FASTag is a reloadable tag that allows automatic deduction of toll without having to stop for carrying out the cash transaction. The tag uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and is fixed on the windscreen of the vehicle once active.

Point of sale
The tag can be obtained at toll plazas or issuer agencies such as banks. Some banks have online forms that can be filled up by interested customers. Once enquiry forms are filled, and query is generated, the customer can visit the office to fill up a required form and submit necessary documents to create a FASTag account.

Documents
The following documents are needed for issue of FASTag:
Registration certificate of the vehicle.
Passport size photo of the vehicle owner.
KYC documents of the vehicle owner. (Identity proof, address proof).

Charges
A one-time tag joining fee of about Rs 200 is levied by the issuer agency.

A refundable deposit depending upon the type of vehicle is to be paid to the issuer agency at the time of issue of FASTag.

The deposit amount is refunded at the time of FASTag account closure

Recharge
The FASTag account can be operated online using the issuer agency's web portal. The account can be recharged online using debit/credit card/ RTGS/NEFT or through Netbanking. For online recharge, convenience fees are levied against transaction processing fees

Points to note
* The customer is required to carry original documents for verification at the time of submission of application for FASTag.

*A cashback of 7.5% of the toll charges is available for 2017-18 for payment of toll using FASTag.
